On the Brooks

Set amidst Kerala’s lush greenery, On the Brooks is a single-storey home in Kochi that reinterprets traditional Kerala architecture through a modern lens. Inspired by the flow of a natural brook, its simple linear form and rustic brick exterior are complemented by water channels running around and through the house, creating a strong connection with nature. Long views lead to a semi-open courtyard framed by patterned brick walls that reflect the movement of water. Traditional elements such as the padippura, courtyards, verandahs, and thinnai are reimagined for modern living, enhancing openness, ventilation, and the flow between spaces.Locally sourced brick, concrete, steel, cane, and glass highlight local craftsmanship and sustainable practices.

A geometric cane canopy and curved brick wall with semi-circular arches add character, while the floating roof provides shade and collects rainwater. The collected water flows through the channels and is reused for orchard irrigation.Designed for its climate and surroundings, the house combines simplicity, craftsmanship, and sustainability to create comfortable spaces that connect people with nature while celebrating Kerala’s architectural heritage

The sections highlight a low, shaded form with deep overhangs, open living spaces, and strong visual connections to the surrounding landscape.

Section B

The home sits gently within the landscape, with its low, linear form, warm brick surfaces, and floating roof complementing the surrounding greenery. The trees and open setting soften the architecture, while the girl playing brings movement and warmth to the scene. Together, they create a natural, lived-in atmosphere where architecture and everyday life become one.

With its simple linear design and rustic brick exterior, the house is inspired by the flow of a natural brook. Water channels run around and through the house, creating a close connection between the home and its surroundings.

Facade

At On the Brooks, the sinuous brick focus wall stands out yet stays true to the home’s earthy harmony — its undulating form evoking a stream, deepened by rhythmic shadows at dusk. Here, brick becomes artistic expression, not just a building block, crowned by a parasol roof that balances the two forms.

Door

Rooted in Kerala’s architectural context, the front door of On the Brooks reinterprets the traditional “padippura” — a rough concrete frame meets an elegantly patterned wooden door, crafted from 550 pieces of veneer set in a geometric grid. Flanking jali panels complete the picture, marking a striking, prominent entrance.

Water Channel

Rainwater is guided from the roof through a shallow rill tracing the home’s visual axis, slipping beneath entrance steps toward the courtyard. The plan is organized around elongated visual corridors, animated by these channels as they lead inward. More than water management, it is a spatial device, turning necessity into a quiet celebration of the monsoon.

Swing

The Aattuthottil reinterprets the traditional Kerala swing as a sofa in motion, blending intricate woodwork with brass fittings for a seating experience that feels both nostalgic and dynamic. Suspended above one of the home’s water channels, it invites a moment of pause, a place to linger between the rhythm of everyday life and the quiet flow of water beneath.

Courtyard

The courtyard at On the Brooks is where the monsoon comes alive — circular windows frame lush greenery, while a sunlit, water-fed corridor channels rain from roof to orchard. Framed by rustic brick and sleek glass, this sanctuary anchors the home’s most vital visual axis.
